Internet and Sex Crimes
At times, it seems as if Florida is the sex crimes capital of the nation. When we were prosecuting child abuse and sex-related crimes for the State Attorney’s Office, it seemed as if there was a new sex case catching national headlines on a monthly basis.
As a result of some of Florida’s high-profile child sex cases, we now have some of the toughest laws in the nation. Putting that aside, there are very few crimes that can damage your reputation and life as much as a sex crime. We only need to watch one re-run of “To Catch a Predator” on MSNBC to see the stigma that an Internet sex crime will cause. Once an individual is convicted of certain sexually motivated crimes, they will face numerous obstacles for the rest of their life.
As harsh as the potential penalties can be, these cases are often very difficult for prosecutors to obtain convictions. In many cases, sexual crimes lack physical evidence. This is especially true when the crime is “late reported” by the alleged victim. At that point, it is usually the victim’s credibility (or lack thereof) that the State rests its case on.
Because these crimes are aggressively pursued by the State of Florida, it goes without question that you will need an aggressive and experienced attorney to fight your sex crime. As former child abuse and sex crime prosecutors, we have seen many of these cases fall apart once they are thoroughly investigated and questioned by competent defense counsel.
